Atikokan River-Nym Lake
42.5km in length. This is a multi-dimensional section of the combines pristine lake with exciting river environments and ecologically interesting wetland creeks.
Route direction would be from east to west. The Atikokan River route from Nym Lake to the end point in Atikokan is an excellent day outing; preferred paddling time would be earlier season, mid-May through July. After this time the water levels recede and leave boulder rapids. The Atikokan River is novice rated for basic whitewater skills, most rapids rated at CI on the International River Grading System (IRGS).
There are 5 portages along this section of the Quetico Trail with total length combined is 13,615m of land trails or 6.5% of the total distance. This makes the Quetico Trail a moderately challenging route. Over half of the route is designed along low-use or unmaintained territory moderately easy route, despite the length of some of the portages. The longer portages are generally level, albeit, with many wet sections where stable footing is compromised. Portages also run through the downtown municipality of Atikokan where travelers may stock up on supplies, take in some other local sights and more.
