About the Trail

“Thunder bird” in the Ogibway language, the "Animikii" trail is a 136 km primarily water trail linking the Thunder Bay hiking trail and the Omimi water trail.

The Animikii Trail takes paddlers from Fort William Historical Park on the Kaministiquia River to Pigeon River Provincial Park in Ontario or for the more adventerous to the Grand Portage National Monument south of the international border in Minnesota.

Water travelers enjoy the Kaministiqua River and experience the challenge of soaring cliffs, pebble beaches and cold clear waters of the largest freshwater lake (by surface area) in the world- Lake Superior.

Along the Canadian border trail travelers can experience a combination of hiking trails in Pigeon River Provincial Park that connect Lake Superior to Highway 593. A bike route along Highway 593 connects to a short hiking trail off of the Old Border Road to the Arrow River Road. Cyclyists can then ride along this gravel road to North Fowl Lake

At North Fowl Lake this land trail meets with the Path of the Paddle water route and carries on west on the Omimi Trail.
